Lesson 4.2: Changing Your Web Site Address (URL)

You can change the address or Universal Resource Locator (URL) of your Web Site. The system automatically generates a URL, or Web Site address, for your Web Site when it is created. Typically, it is a long string of numerals and characters. For example:

http://www.familyshoebox.com/family/
ignore?MIval=cge&GID=01001000010893363158877903

People can get to your Web Site by typing in this address into their browser's location bar. Since this address is long and hard to remember, you may want to change the URL by giving it a shorter nickname so that you and other people can get to your Web Site more easily.

Make sure you are logged in as a Web Site Administrator and Click the Web Site Manager Button.

Scroll to the Preferences Option Section.
It is highlighted in green.

Click on Change Web Site Address (URL).

Enter one word in the Nickname box.
Do not include any punctuation, including
hyphens, slashes, quotes, or dashes. Do not include spaces. This one word will replace the long string of numerals and characters.

  For example: http://www.familyshoebox.com/family/JonesFamily

Click Preview to see your nicknamed address

Note: If the word that you typed in has already been used by another Web Site Administrator, an error message will appear at the top of the page. Simply type in another word instead and click Preview again.

At the arrow below you can see an example of a previewed URL. You can cut and paste your web address from the page that you are on into your browser and you will go to your Web Site's starting page.

Click the Done button at the bottom of the page.

To exit the Web Site Manager, Click the "Return to Your Site Name Home Page" link on your Web Site Manager Page.
