Conduct an advanced search
  1. From any search box, click Advanced Search. The Advanced Search page displays.

  2. In the Search for section, click one of the following four radio buttons to indicate the type of search method. For instructions on how to enter the text for these types of searches, see Search Tips.

    • Any of the words: This type of search (called a "keyword search") interprets all of the words in the search text box as separate words. A match is found if any of the words are included in the item being searched on.

Example: walk the dog - Any item containing any or all of these words is a match, including sidewalk, theology, and doggerel.

    • This exact phrase: This type of search (called an "exact phrase search") requires that all of the words must be found in the exact order they are specified in order for an item to be considered a match. Text must be enclosed in quotes.

Example: "walk the dog" - All three of the words in this exact order must be found.

    • This word part: This type of search (called a "partial word search") allows the user to specify just a part of a word. Items that are considered matches will have the word or words that contain the indicated letters in the indicated order.

NOTE: This search is less accurate. It bases its results on a relevance ranking of 50 or above on a 100-point scale.

Example: walk would find walk, walkway, and sidewalk.

    • This Boolean phrase: The operator (AND, OR, or AND NOT) used indicates what the search will be looking for:
      • AND

Each of the words joined by the AND must appear somewhere within the item.

Example: bob AND white will find these two bits of text: bob drives a white car and Sara cut her white hair in a bob.

      • OR

At least one of the words joined by the OR must appear somewhere within the item.

Example: work OR play will find these two bits of text: Write if you find work and Macbeth is a time-honored play.

      • AND NOT

The first word (the one before the AND NOT) must appear, and the second word (the one after the AND NOT) must not appear in the item.

Example: vacation AND NOT holiday will exclude We took our vacation over the Memorial Day holiday in the search results.

  3. In the Return section, click one or more check boxes next to items that you want in your search results (for example, Channels, Web Sites, Events, or Postings). If you don't want to see an item, click on it again to remove the check from the box.
  4. Click Search. A list of results appears.
  5. From the search results, click on the link for the page you want to see.
